Durham has one of the most exciting student theatre scenes in the country, with over 90 productions annually from 27 active theatre companies.
Bursting with talentIf you're interested in theatre, then Durham is the place for you. Our creative students come together to produce and perform a diverse range of shows throughout the year. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their previous experience, so whether you want to be onstage, backstage, produce, direct, or even run your own theatre company,Durham Student Theatre (DST) aims to provide opportunities and support to help you do what you love doing. Durham Drama FestivalThis amazing festival was created by our students and is run by our students. It showcases the talent of Durham’s student scriptwriters and performers.
For a week in February every year, over 100 students come together to act, direct, produce, tech – and write brand new exciting theatre. There are also workshops run by industry professionals, and fabulous events to get involved with.
Durham Drama Festival. is one of the most important events in the Durham Student Theatre calendar, so come along and get involved!
Highlights- Durham Drama Festival – annual new writing festival, now in its 43rd year, which is judged by a panel of industry professionals
- Edinburgh Festival Fringe – over 10 productions go to Edinburgh every year
- Annual touring productions, opportunities across the United Kingdom as well as the United States
- Continued success at the National Student Drama Festival
- Finalist Showcase performed in Durham and London's West End.
Wonderful theatresOur students perform a different show every week during term time, in our very own theatre, The Assembly Rooms Theatre. Located right in the heart of historic Durham City, the 180 seat theatre is undergoing a £2 million renovation and will be ready for its grand re-opening in October 2019.
Student theatre and music societies also make good use of the city's main professional theatre,Gala Durham with 5 productions a year staged here. Highlights include The Durham Revue’s annual sketch comedy compilation Comedyfest with performers from The Oxford Revue and Cambridge Footlights, as well as DULOG’s annual week-long run of a musical, which have previously included Guys and Dolls, Spamalot and Singin' in the Rain.
Historic venuesOur students get to stage productions in unique settings around Durham, including the imposing Great Hall and intimate Norman Chapel of Durham Castle.
Our unique relationship with Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site means the spectacular Durham Cathedral. also hosts regular student performances, including major concerts with hundreds of student musicians and atmospheric drama performed in this world-famous venue.
National Student Drama FestivalOur students have enjoyed continued success at the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF). Since 2016, there have been eight productions from Durham selected to take part, making Durham the most represented and successful student theatre scene of any university at the festival.
Amongst other awards, Durham students have won 'The Cameron Mackintosh Award' and both awards for 'Spotlight Most Promising Actor' and 'Best Show'.
