Lumiere

Welcome to Lumiere Durham 2017

Durham University is proud to be a major partner of Lumiere 2017.

Back in Durham for the fifth time, from 16 to 19 November, artists from around the world will illuminate the City in delightful and unexpected ways, with a series of light installations to explore.

Installations

Across Durham City, 29 artworks will illuminate the November skyline with Durham University playing host to a number of installations.

From the beautiful Botanic Garden to our outstanding new Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics and historic Durham Castle (University College) on the City’s iconic World Heritage Site, we are proud to be home to a number of Lumiere’s spectacular exhibits and to welcome visitors to Lumiere to the University.

Related Research

Durham is one of the world’s leading research intensive universities, with experts drawn from around the globe.

Our research has helped to inspire a number of the installations that will enthral visitors to Lumiere. This year the festival will showcase the work of our renowned Institute for Computational Cosmology which is investigating the mysteries of the Universe.

Outreach

Each year we welcome thousands of visitors to our museums, attractions, public lectures, festivals and sports and arts facilities.

Our staff and students also take part in extensive volunteering and outreach programmes, supporting community projects and taking their expertise into the region’s classrooms to enhance children’s learning. Find out more here about how our experts are helping to bring Lumiere to the public.
